DCEG

Introduction

The Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG) is the largest division under NCI. The Division is the world’s most comprehensive cancer epidemiology research group. Its renowned epidemiologists, geneticists, and biostatisticians conduct population and multidisciplinary research to discover the genetic and environmental determinants of cancer and new approaches to cancer prevention. The Division’s research informs public health policy in the United States and around the world.

The Problem & Solution

I led design efforts for creation of a new website for the DCEG, DCEG.cancer.gov. I developed Axure prototypes and designed studies and test cases for usability testing. I conducted stakeholder interviews to gather business requirements, user requirements and make IA recommendations for content and usability improvements. I created a new visual design style, color palette, illustrations, and photos that streamlined the user experience, and improved accessibility. The site can be viewed at https://dceg.cancer.gov/.

I also designed the Breast Cancer Risk Assessment tool for DCEG which allows health professionals to estimate a woman's risk of developing invasive breast cancer over the next 5 years and up to age 90 (lifetime risk). I used Sketch and Invision/Marvel to prototype designs and Axure to prototype functionality and interactivity. I conducted usability testing sessions to inform improvements and performed quality assurance testing. My efforts were awarded an NCI Director’s Award of Merit for designing the DCEG Risk Assessment tools in 2018.

I redesigned DCEG in 2014 then again in 2019 (see below).
